Artist Parmigianino

"Girolano Franceso Maria Mazzola was more commonly known as Parmigianino, a nickname meaning “the little one from Parma”. Born in 1503, Parmigianino (also sometimes known as Parmigiano) was a prominent painter active in Florence, Rome, Bologna and Parma during the Renaissance.Parmigianino and his siblings were raised by their uncles on the death of their father two years after the boy’s birth. Both modest painters, Parmigianino soon began to assist them in their commissions. Once trained, he travelled throughout Italy in search of work before visiting Rome in 1524 seeking the patronage of the Medici Pope, Clement VII. Vasari recorded that, during this visit, Parmigianino was “celebrated as a Raphael reborn” and a number of prestigious commissions were completed over subsequent years, including the decoration of the church of San Salvatore in Lauro. His paintings today are held in major museums around the world including the Uffizi in Florence, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.Parmigianino died at the age of just 37 in August 1540."
